What to do: Get on Route 19 and head east to Hilo. On this drive, you will view the lovely Hamakua Coast. If you are staying in downtown Kona , it takes 2 1/2 hours. If you are staying in Waikaloa (where the Hilton is , etc), then it takes 2 hours. The upshot is that it's a breathtaking drive! (Famed in many a Hawaiian song) Once in Hilo, park at the unlimited Free Park and Ride as marked on the map shown here. Hint: Turn right at the Gazebo. Make another right. Park in any of the free Park-n-Ride lots near the Bus Depot. And keep your cellphone charged and on.
